Acute copper toxicity in juvenile fat snook Centropomus parallelus (Teleostei: Centropomidae) in sea water Neotropical Ichthyology
Oliveira,Bruno L.; Fernandes,Luiz F. Loureiro; Bianchini,Adalto; Chippari-Gomes,Adriana R.; Silva,Bruno F.; Brandão,Geisamanda P.; Gomes,Levy C..
Three experiments were designed to assess the accumulation and acute toxicity of copper (Cu) in juvenile fat snook Centropomusparallelus. The first experiment was performed to determine the 96-h lethal concentration (LC50) of Cu. The second experiment was designed to assess the effects of sublethal concentrations of Cu (0.47 and 0.94 mg/L), while the third one allowed us to test the recovery capacity of fish exposed to the sublethal concentrations Cu and kept in sea water without Cu addition. The LC50value for Cu was found to be 1.88 mg/L Cu. Fish exposed to the sublethal concentrations of Cu showed a significant accumulation of Cu in gills at 96 h respect to the control ones (0.43 µg/g Cu). No significant difference was observed in the accumulation of Cu...

Pequeux, A; Lignon, J.
This paper deals mostly with recent physiological data on ion transport across the gill tissue and an attempt is made to correlate them with blood osmoregulation and ecological distribution in euryhaline decapods. A particular attention is paid to the gills of the fully euryhaline Chinese crab Eriocheir sinensis . Supporting this ecophysiological approach, there is an important ultrastructural analysis of the gill epithelium under various salinity conditions. The possible part played by the cuticle in ions movements is also considered.

Comet assay comparison of different Corbicula fluminea (Mollusca) tissues for the detection of genotoxicity Genet. Mol. Biol.
Rigonato,Janaina; Mantovani,Mário Sérgio; Jordão,Berenice Quinzani.
The comet assay was used to study the sensitivity of the widely distributed freshwater bivalve mollusk Corbicula fluminea to the DNA-damaging alkylating-agent methylmethane sulfonate (MMS). This study was undertaken to ascertain if C. fluminea is a good bioindicator of pollutants in aquatic environments and identify which C. fluminea tissue is most effective and practical for genotoxicity studies. The mollusks were exposed to 0.6, 1.2 or 2.4 X 10-4 M MMS for 40 min and their hemolymph, gill tissue and digestive gland tissue assessed for the level of DNA damage and the time needed for the tissues to recovery. Regression analysis showed a direct linear dose-response relationship between MMS concentration and the number of damaged cells for hemolymph and...

Abstract Red swamp crayfish is an important model organism for research of the invertebrate innate immunity mechanism. Its excellent disease resistance against bacteria, fungi, and viruses is well-known. However, the antiviral mechanisms of crayfish remain unclear. In this study, we obtained high-quality sequence reads from normal and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV)-challenged crayfish gills. For group normal (GN), 39,390,280 high-quality clean reads were randomly assembled to produce 172,591 contigs; whereas, 34,011,488 high-quality clean reads were randomly assembled to produce 182,176 contigs for group WSSV-challenged (GW). After GO annotations analysis, a total of 35,539 (90.01%), 14,931 (37.82%), 28,221 (71.48%), 25,290 (64.05%), 15,595 (39.50%), and...

Through the analysis of the morphological changes ocurring in the process of growth, it was possible to identify three stages (primary juvenile: 25-75 mm; secondary juvenile: 76-160 mm; and juvenile preadult: 161-250 mm)during the first year of the species life. Regression equations for the different relations studied: body weight/body lenght, body surface/body lenght, body surface/body weight, and metabolic rate/body lenght, have been calculated for each stage. The variation of the number of gill rakers, mean distance between adjacent rakers and mean values of gill rakers lenght in reference to body growth was studied, and the relation between filtering area and body length was established.

Diagenetic Processes in Aquaculture Ponds Showing Metal Accumulation on Shrimp Gills ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues; Royer, Florence; Caradec, Florian; Lopez, Etienne; Hubert, Clarisse; Rabiller, Emilie; Desclaux, Terence; Fernandez, Jean-michel; Andrieux-loyer, Francoise.
The gill is the organ by which many toxic metals are taken up by crustaceans. Iron is known to precipitate at its surface, a phenomenon recently observed in some tropical aquaculture ponds. The present study uses a field approach to understand better the environmental conditions and ecological processes involved in this deposit. Because shrimp are exposed to reduced products originating from organic waste accumulated in the sediment, spatial variation in pH, redox potential and concentrations of dissolved metals in pore water were investigated in these ponds. Total organic carbon, acid volatile sulfide and pyrite were also analyzed in the solid phase. Fe2+ in pore waters showed high spatial variability between ponds and within the same pond with...

Differential distribution of V-type H+-ATPase and Na+/K+-ATPase in the branchial chamber of the palaemonid shrimp Macrobrachium amazonicum ArchiMer
Boudour-boucheker, Nesrine; Boulo, Viviane; Charmantier-daures, Mireille; Grousset, Evelyse; Anger, Klaus; Charmantier, Guy; Lorin-nebel, Catherine.
V-H+-ATPase and Na+/K+-ATPase were localized in the gills and branchiostegites of M. amazonicum and the effects of salinity on the branchial chamber ultrastructure and on the localization of transporters were investigated. Gills present septal and pillar cells. In freshwater (FW), the apical surface of pillar cells is amplified by extensive evaginations associated with mitochondria. V-H+-ATPase immunofluorescence was localized in the membranes of the apical evaginations and in clustered subapical areas of pillar cells, suggesting labeling of intracellular vesicle membranes. Na+/K+-ATPase labeling was restricted to the septal cells. No difference in immunostaining was recorded for both proteins according to salinity (FW vs. 25 PSU). In the branchiostegite,...

Diseases of cultured prawns in Australia ArchiMer
Lester, R; Paynter, J.
Plebejus baculovirus and other MBV-related viruses have been found in Penaeus plebejus, P. monodon and P. merguiensis . They appear highly pathogenic in certain situations currently undefined. We have found Hepatopancreatic Parvo-like Virus (< hpv) in wild P. esculentus and P. merguiensis but not yet in cultured prawns. The amphophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies we find in P. esculentus do not appear to have a viral cause.

Epithelial gill cells in the armored catfish, Hypostomus cf. plecostomus (Loricariidae) BJB
FERNANDES,M. N.; PERNA-MARTINS,S. A..
Epithelial gill cell morphology and distribution were investigated in the armored catfish, Hypostomus cf. plecostomus, which lives in soft ion-poor Brazilian freshwaters. Pavement cells are the most abundant type of cell on both filament and lamellar epithelia and there are a great number of mucous and chloride cells between them. Mucous cells are almost covered by adjacent pavement cells and have large packed granules showing electrondense differences. No mucous cells were found on the lamellar epithelium. Chloride cell were distributed throughout both epithelia and usually have large apical surface facing the external medium and may exhibit short and sparsely distributed microvilli. The presence of chloride cells on the lamellar epithelium may be an...

Ameur, S.; Ghedira, J.; Guerbej, H.; Jebali, J.; Bouraoui, J.; Boussetta, H..

Histological Alterations in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758) Gills as Potential Biomarkers for Fungicide Contamination BABT
Stoyanova,Stela; Yancheva,Vesela Slavcheva; Velcheva,Iliana; Uchikova,Ekaterina; Georgieva,Elenka.
ABSTRACTThe present study aimed to investigate the histological alterations in common carp gills caused by a fosetyl-Al and fenamidone based fungicide tested in laboratory conditions at 30, 38 and 50 mg/L concentration. In general, all the tested concentrations activated compensatory-adaptive mechanisms, which caused pathological changes in the fish gills. Results showed different histological alterations in the gill structure, which included lamellar lifting, edema, proliferation of the glandular cells and epithelium, covering the gill filament, fusion and degenerative alterations. Blood circulatory system showed vasodilatation of the secondary lamellae and aneurysms. Overall, there was enhancement of the gill histological changes, which was...

Gallis, J; Piquemal, S; Lambert, J; Sergent, P; Rousseau, V.
Oxygen consumption, water, K super(+) and Na super(+) contents were measured in white muscle, red muscle and gill epithelium in the mullet Chelon labrosus) in relation with the duration of fresh water or sea water (1500mOsm) adaptation. The unit respiratory activities in gill and red muscle where respectively 5 and 3 timesmore elevated than in white muscle. The pericellular K super(+)/Na super(+) ratio of the 3 tissues decreased with the fresh water adaptation duration. In the gill, the intracellular K super(+)/Na super(+) ratio was stable while the parameter decreased strongly in the white muscle. The results are discussed in relation to energetic cost of homocellular regulation and homoepithelial regulation.

Mitochondria-rich cells changes induced by nitrite exposure in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum Cuvier, 1818) Anais da ABC (AABC)
COSTA,OSCAR T.F. DA; RAMOS,CLEVERSON A.; DUNCAN,WALLICE P.; LAMEIRAS,JULIANA L.V.; FERNANDES,MARISA N..
ABSTRACT The gill mitochondria-rich cells of the juvenile Amazonian fish Colossoma macropomum were analyzed using light and scanning and transmission electron microscopy after 96 h exposure to 0.04 and 0.2 mM nitrite. Although the number of mitochondria-rich cells decreased significantly in the lamellar epithelium, no decrease was found in the interlamellar region of the gill filament. Nitrite exposure caused significant reduction on the apical surface area of individual mitochondria-rich cells (p < 0.05), with a resulting reduction of the fractional area of these cells in both the lamellar and filament epithelium. Swelling of endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, nuclear envelope and mitochondria were the main changes found in the mitochondria-rich cells....

Morphological Studies on the Gills of Puffer Fish (Lagocephalus sceleratus, Gmelin, 1789) International Journal of Morphology
Abumandour,Mohamed M. A; Gewaily,Mahmoud S.
In the present study, we focused on the morphology of L. sceleratus gills using gross anatomy, scanning electron microscopy as well as light microscopy. Results of this study revealed that the gill openings appeared as simple slits anterior to the pectoral fin without distinct opercular cover. The gill system consisted of three pairs of gill arches carrying two rows of gill rakers on its concave border and gill filaments on its convex border. SEM showed that all surfaces of the gill arch were characterized by the presence of the longitudinal ridges with many taste buds in addition to many spines around the rakers. Histologically, the gill arch was composed of curved bar of hyaline cartilage with slightly elevated area corresponding to the sites of gill...

Leonard, Noemie.
Recirculation of the water of fish rearing systems requires a biological treatment based on the nitrifying activity of autotrophic bacteria. In parallel heterotrophic bacterial populations utilise the organic substrate, produced by the fish, to grow. Opposite to the autotrophic populations, the heterotrophic bacteria (1) have a quick growth and (2) might contain fish pathogenic strains. The main aim was to characterise the heterotrophic bacteria populations ?.nd to understand (1) which parameters do control the dynamics of their populations and (2) their influence on the quality of the recirculating water. In a rearing system, the heterotrophic bacterial populations are stable in number and in genus, for a given operating mode. The bacteria are either...
